What is a Neuropsychological Evaluation?
Neuropsychology is a specialized field of clinical psychology that seeks to better understand how the brain and psychosocial factors impacts thinking, learning, mood and behavior by performing detailed assessments that require several hours. The neuropsychological evaluation objectively determines an individual’s cognitive strengths and weaknesses by giving standardized tests with performance of the individual compared with norms for people the same age. The test results are combined with a detailed history that often includes review of extensive records. The history is important, because life experiences affects response to and recovery from injury and disease. Through analysis of the history and of test results, the neuropsychologist can make recommendations for diagnosis, care and treatment planning, education and training, and work. Neuropsychological evaluations typically require 5-7 hours with some exceptions.
A psychological evaluation differs from a neuropsychological evaluation. In a psychological evaluation the emphasis is on emotional issues and conditions such as stress, anxiety and depression rather than on cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Psychological evaluations typically require 3-4 hours with some exceptions.
Why Choose a Board-Certified Neuropsychologist?
The American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) has several specialty certifications, including Clinical Neuropsychology. To become board certified, the neuropsychologist must pass some tests. Many people practicing neuropsychology are not board certified.
